Wally Pfister to receive AFI honor

Cinematographer draws Schaffner Medal

The American Film Institute has tapped cinematographer Wally Pfister to receive its Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal.

Pfister will be presented with the medal as part of the AFI Life Achievement Award honoring Shirley MacLaine, to be held at Sony Studios on June 7.

The Schaffner medal recognizes a graduate of the AFI Conservatory or AFI Directing Workshop for Women. Pfister is a 1991 graduate of the AFI Conservatory.

Other AFI alumni who have been awarded the medal including Darren Aronofsky, Amy Heckerling, Janusz Kaminski, David Lynch, Terrence Malick and Ed Zwick.

Pfister has collaborated with director Christopher Nolan on every motion picture Nolan has directed since "Memento," including "Insomnia," "Batman Begins," "The Prestige," "The Dark Knight," "Inception" (for which Pfister received the Oscar) and "The Dark Knight rises." Other recent films include "Moneyball" and "Marley."
